Mary Greenstead
'Ashbee and the Guild of Handicraft:
from London’s East End to Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire'
Inspired by the ethos of Toynbee Hall and the ideas of John Ruskin and Edward Carpenter,
C R Ashbee set up the School and Guild of Handicraft in Whitechapel in 1888 before
moving two years later to Essex House in Mile End Road.
The Guild’s next move in 1902 was a much larger undertaking –
hugely romantic and possibly foolhardy – when 50 craftsmen and their families relocated
to the Cotswold town of Chipping Campden.
This talk looks at the background and long-term impact of this move on Ashbee,
on the Guildsmen and on Chipping Campden itself
which Ashbee referred to as ‘the City of the Sun’.
Both talks will be held at the Gallery 7.30pm start - doors open 7.00pm
