We are delighted to report that in May, Peter Cormack MBE, FSA, the Gallery’s former Keeper, joined the Research Department of the V&A Museum as a Visiting Research Fellow. During his 18-month Fellowship he will be working on his book on Stained Glass of the Arts & Crafts Movement. This is a topic Peter has been researching for over thirty years, and which was the theme of several pioneering exhibitions curated by him at the Gallery. This years AGM will held at St Johns Church Leytonstone on Thursday 22 July 7.30pm. Free St John the Baptist Following the success of last years trip to the Red House the Friends Annual Summer Picnic will be on Saturday 3rd of July at Standen, East Grinstead, this year. The minibus will be departing from the Gallery at 10am and tickets will cost from £25, less if you are a member of the NT or driving yourself there. Standen is a gem of the Arts & Crafts Movement, hidden at the end of a quiet Sussex lane with breathtaking views over the High Weald and Weirwood Reservoir. The design of the house is a monument to the combined genius of architect Philip Webb and his friend William Morris. All the big names of the Arts & Crafts period are represented, including ceramics by William De Morgan and metalwork by W. A. S. Benson. The beautiful hillside gardens provide year-round interest; the woodlands, a number of easily accessible walks. We have also purchased for the Gallery a wonderful group of early experimental tiles designed by William Morris and made by William De Morgan from the very important collection of the late Jon Catleugh who was collecting De Morgan tiles for 60 years until his death in January 2009. Jon wrote seminal book on De Morgan tiles first published in 1983, still in print today.
The Friends have donated to the William Morris Gallery a fascinating Morris & Co embroidery archive. This archive appears to have belonged to one of the embroiderers employed by Morris & Co and includes a collection of rare catalogues from both the Oxford Street period, and the later Hanover Square period. It also includes a whole series of scale watercolours for embroideries, all stamped Morris & Co. as well as other embroidery related ephemera.
