An exhibition of hand-printed Morris wallpapers goes on show today, May 12, and remains open until June 12 in The Attic gallery in Lines of Pinner store, Pinner, Middlesex.

The exhibition – entitled William Morris: The Poet and paper-maker – includes rarely seen flocked VRI Cipher wallpaper, designed for Queen Victoria for use in Balmoral Castle, and printed with a fine merino wool flock.

Also on display will be modern reprints of original Morris designs alongside those hand-printed using the original pearwood blocks and books of hand-printed wallpapers, including the 1960s collection of psychedelic colourways.

Lines of Pinner is a family business which dates back to Morris’s era and has been selling Morris & Co wallpapers and furnishings since they were re-launched by Sanderson in the 1960s.

Its Attic gallery contains a number of original features, like its beamed structure and wattle and daub walls. It has been decorated with a number of Morris’s designs including hangings of Strawberry Thief as well as Artichoke which was designed by his colleague, John Henry Dearle.

On Thursday, May 31, and Tuesday, June 5, between 2pm and 3pm, Kara Lines will give a talk about Morris & Co wallpapers, with a focus on those designed by Morris himself. This will be an opportunity to view further samples of Morris’s hand-printed wallpapers.

The shop and gallery at 26 High Street, Pinner, HA5 5PW, are open from 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday. The nearest tube station is Pinner on the Metropolitan line, just a short walk from the store. There is no lift to The Attic which can be accessed only by stairs.

Book now if you would like to join the Friends on a very special tour of the recently re-opened De Morgan Centre

The centre in Wandsworth, which has been beautifully refurbished, is opening exclusively for the Friends with a tour and the opportunity to browse on Sunday, May 27, at 2pm.

A lifelong friend of William Morris, William De Morgan designed tiles, stained glass and furniture for Morris & Co from 1863 to 1872. His tiles are often based on medieval designs or Persian patterns, and he experimented with innovative glazes and firing techniques. Galleons and fish were popular motifs, as were “fantastical” birds and other animals. His work has covered everything from Leighton House to P&O liners and his wife was a stupendous painter.

Tickets £5 / £6.50 (non-Friends) are available from Martin Adams, 45 Lloyd Road, London E17 6NP. Please send a stamped addressed envelope.

The centre is at 38 West Hill, London,SW18 1RX (www.demorgan.org.uk). Nearest rail station: Putney. Nearest underground: East Putney (10 minute walk or 3 stops on the bus). Buses: 37, 170, 337 (to Wandsworth Museum bus stop).

Gardens of William Morris, an illustrated talk by Jill, Duchess of Hamilton, will take place on Wednesday, 21 March, at the Garden Museum in Lambeth.

Morris is usually associated with house interiors, the Arts & Crafts Movement and the revival of medieval crafts, but Jill Hamilton shows an overlooked side of this complex artist – his passion for gardens.

In a lively mix of biography, anecdote and horticulture, she will analyse the eight gardening principles of Morris and his ideas on green cities and the need for open spaces.

She will examine the influences which shaped Morris’s outlook on art and gardens, discuss the gardens at the three houses he owned (the Red House, Kelmscott Manor and Kelmscott House), and look at the overlap between his principles in garden design and the design in his fabric and tile patterns.

Following the discussion, you are invited to stay for a two-course meal and glass of wine in the Garden Cafe.

Doors open at 6pm, event begins at 6.30pm, at the museum in Lambeth Palace Road, SE1 7LB. Tickets are £15 (£10 for Museum Friends and Friends of the William Morris Gallery). Dinner tickets are £20 (vegan option available). Book seats and meals on 020 7401 8865.

Those arriving at 6pm will have time to view the current exhibition, From Garden City to Green City. It explores historic and futuristic visions of growing in the city.

Featured in the exhibition is William Morris’s Utopian book, News from Nowhere. On display is an early 1893 copy by Kelmscott Press that once belonged to museum curator and Kelmscott collecter, Sydney Cockerell.

William Morris Birthday Lecture, Saturday 24 March, 2.30pm, Forest School, Oakhurst Gardens, London E17 3PY, booking essential.

Morris biographer Fiona MacCarthy will deliver this year’s birthday lecture in the chapel at Forest School.

Telling Stories: Burne-Jones, William Morris and the Love of Narrative is the title of her illustrated talk.

Forest School is a fitting venue for the lecture. William Morris’s father helped found the school, his brothers all attended it and Morris & Co installed windows in the chapel, which will form a perfect backdrop for the birthday celebration.

Fiona has written acclaimed biographies of Eric Gill and William Morris and has just released her opus on Edward Burne-Jones, the artist and lifelong friend of William Morris. The Last Pre-Raphaelite examines the friendship between the two in their work, aspirations and desire to use their art to change the world. Her talk will illustrate this path they took both in the stories they told and the story of their lives. The talk will be followed by refreshments in the great hall.

There is ample parking in the school grounds; you can travel by public transport from Liverpool Street Station (Chingford Line) to Wood Street Station then by taxi or a 10 minute walk; by Underground on the Central Line to Snaresbrook Station, then 10 minuteswalk or by taxi or the Victoria Line to Walthamstow Central Station then by taxi or 20 bus (Debden); the 20 and W12 bus also serve the school. For complete information on how to get to the school follow the link; www.forest.org.uk/information/maps-and-directions

The lecture is FREE but you will require a ticket. Tickets are available from Vestry House Museum, the reception desk at the school and by post (please send a stamped addressed envelope to Martin Adams 45 Lloyd Road London E17 6NP).
